happy hour at the ranstead room.

ranstead has an appealing speakeasy mustiness and is nicely attitude-free. we drank with a crowd whose sartorial styles ranged as wide as their ages.

the only seemingly pretentious moment: when the server corrected my pronunciation of the “jamaica” spiced popcorn (“ha-MAI-ca”? really?). but it was zesty, as promised—it reminded me very much of cheetos. it’s just as addictive.

a few snapshots from one of the most charming dining rooms in brooklyn…

@berlyn restaurant

i especially love the kasespaetzle and its lightly torched top, a lighter but still wonderfully indulgent variation on mac and cheese.  i would find it hard to resist ordering the beet salad the next time round, so prettily plated, on a blanket of horseradish sour cream dressing, toasted hazelnuts providing an earthly crunch.

potatoes to the nth power…

if i am ever to train for — or recover from?— an endurance event, i would make brunch at mile end my first stop.

the potatoes in the smoked meat hash are impeccably cubed and nicely-seasoned but there are simply too many of them, relative to the amount of meat, and unless the rest of the afternoon will be spent hard laboring.

the lean bits and fatty chunks of smoked meat convince me that my next meal at mile end should be a proper brisket sandwich.

the next meal will also certainly involve poutine.

the only question: will i share?
